PSAT FACT SHEET What is the PSAT? PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Juniors and sophomores take the test to prepare for the SAT, a standardized college entrance exam required by most colleges. Who needs to take the PSAT? Students planning to attend college should take the PSAT. Even students who are uncertain about their post-graduation plans should take the PSAT. How will the PSAT help me get into college? Aside from preparing students for the SAT, the PSAT is the first step in entering many scholarship programs. It also lets colleges know you are interested in them, and you will begin getting mail from many colleges and Universities. What kind of questions are on the PSAT? The PSAT has 52 verbal questions, 40 mathematics questions, and 39 writing questions. It tests your language reasoning, math reasoning and writing skills which will help you determine the colleges you should apply to. How can I prepare for this test? Take time to complete the full-length practice test in the Student Bulletin. Also, maintain good attendance and study hard at home. Where do I take the test?
Unlike the SAT, which has many test sites throughout the city, you can take the PSAT right in your high school. How much will it cost? Students who receive free or reduced lunch may have their fee waived and take the test at no cost. See your guidance counselor to see if you qualify. Without a fee-waiver, the test costs $12.00. Baltimore City will pay for the October test. How do I register for the PSAT? See your guidance counselor today to register! ALL 10th and 11th Graders will take the test.
