Arts and Public Service.
What does that mean? For us, it means a dedication to working with and helping people through talents manifested in the Arts. This can be writing, speaking, performing, painting ...CREATING!
Who should apply?
Students who are interested in performing, writing, or social studies (history, law). Students who want to be in front of crowds or like to motivate/influence people.
What will I study?
First you should remember that almost everyone in a Baltimore City Public High School has to get the same diploma. Everyone will have to earn the same English, Social Studies, Math and Science credits. While you take these classes, there should be a focus on the Arts. For example, in Mathematics class, you might study the impact of geometry on painting perspectives. In Government class, you might study Supreme Court cases by arguing them in front of the class.
What will I do?
If you stay on track and get your credits, there will be lots of wiggle
room in your junior and senior year to focus on the arts:
• Advanced Placement classes can earn college credit before you even enter college. We will wait to see what student interest is, but the classes can be offered in English, History, and more specific Arts.
• Work experiences can build a resume as well as help you decide on the best career for you. You might get an internship with a local politician, spend time with a painter, or work at a theater.
• For those who are on track for all high school requirements, arrangements can be made to take college classes on nearby campuses.
• In the ninth grade, you had Arts and Expression. Some of that time in the Upper Academies will be used for career exploration. There you will work with professionals from the field, who will guide you through some of the work they do everyday!
